Library FAQs

Do I need to bring my card to check out materials?

  • If you forget your library card, you can still check out materials by presenting a picture ID like your driver’s license.

Can I use my Itasca library card at other libraries?

  • The library participates with most other Illinois libraries in reciprocal borrowing. Most libraries will honor your library card, but will require that you register as a reciprocal borrower and be in good standing at this library. There will be certain restrictions on reciprocal borrowing.

I have a library card from another library. Can I use it here to check out materials?

  • Itasca participates in reciprocal borrowing with other Illinois public libraries. You just register as a reciprocal borrower at the Circulation desk. Your card must be in good standing at your home library. Reciprocal borrowers are not allowed to check out new books.

Do I have to return materials when the library is open?

  • The library maintains a 24 hour book drop at the east end of the library. Books returned during closed hours will be credited as being returned the previous day.

Can I return materials at another library?

  • You can return Itasca materials at other public libraries but the material is not considered returned until it arrives here. If an item is due on Monday and you return it at another library that day, it will be considered overdue when it arrives at this library. Likewise, you can return materials checked out at other libraries here, but the same rule applies concerning the due date.

What if the library doesn’t own an item I’d like to check out?

  • The library participates in inter-library loan with other libraries throughout the United States. Items within the library’s consortium (LINC) can be requested online. Items from libraries outside LINC can be requested through our Reference Department.

Can I reserve an item?

  • If the item you are looking for is already checked out, you may place a reserve on it. You can do this online through the library’s online catalog or at the Circulation Desk.

Can I request the library purchase an item?

  • If there is an item the library does not own that you feel would be beneficial to the collection, you can make suggestions for purchase. There are suggestion cards available at all public service desks. These suggestions will be forwarded to the appropriate department for consideration.  You can also make a suggestion online, by clicking on the "Suggest a Purchase" Quick Link in the left column of the library's home page.

Can I see what I have checked out on the Internet?

  • If you go to the library’s online catalog, at www.linc.lib.il.us, you can see what items you have checked out by logging on using your library card number (located under the bar code on the back of your library card) and your PIN number. The online catalog can also be accessed from the library’s web page (www.itasca.lib.il.us).

I lost an item I checked out. What happens now?

  • If you lose an item, please inform the Circulation desk as soon as possible. You will be charged for the replacement of the item, plus a $5.00 processing fee. If the exact item is no longer available for purchase, you will be charged for the purchase of a like item.

Does the library take donations?

  • The library accepts donations of books, videocassettes, DVDs and music CDs that are in good condition. We do not accept magazines, old encyclopedias, textbooks or materials that are in poor condition. If a patron is interested in donating a subscription to a magazine, the library has an “Adopt-A-Magazine” program. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.

What is my PIN number?

  • If you have not previously set up a PIN number, the library has provided you with one. It is “changeme” and we recommend that you change it at your earliest convenience for security reasons. If you have previously setup a PIN number and cannot remember it, please contact the library and we will reset your PIN number to “changeme.”

Can I renew items?

  • You can renew everything except Videos, DVD's and Magazines that are not overdue, has not been renewed already and does not have any reserves on it.  You can renew items by calling the library at 630-773-1699, by going online (www.linc.lib.il.us), or by coming into the library with the item in hand.

May others use my card?

  • Another person may not use your card. The only exception is a parent using a child’s card that the parent is signed on.

Should I notify the library if I change my address?

  • You should notify the Circulation Department immediately in case of moving or a change in your telephone number. If you have moved out of Itasca, you will be required to get a card in the town you have moved to.
